“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Ghosts, goblins, witches, vampires, demons… no need to fear any of them.

“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world”

So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere. (Luke 9:6)

People will not listen to the gospel if we ignore their physical and emotional needs.  But meeting needs without sharing the good news of Jesus helps no one in the long run.

“Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9)

We have a great and glorious King. The one who rode into town on a donkey.

Jesus never needed man’s accolades to make him great. He didn’t need pomp and circumstance. His greatness came from God.

As will ours.

“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” (2 Corinthians 7:10)

The night Jesus was betrayed, two of his apostles let him down. Peter denied Jesus three times, while Judas was the one who betrayed Jesus. Peter was sorry, terribly grieved; his sorrow led him to repent and be restored.

Judas was also sorry, but it was a worldly regret, not godly repentance. Instead of being restored to his place among the apostles, he took his own life and died an outcast.

When we are sorry for what we have done, we need to let that sorrow move us to make things right with God.

When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” (John 21:21)

Be aware of the people around you.  Be concerned about what is going to happen to them when the Lord returns.  But always look first at yourself.  After all, you can only control yourself… no one else.

Spirits, Demons, and the One Greater than Them All

Lots of frightful things come out at Halloween. Lots of people in spooky costumes, that is. People like to dress up as zombies, vampires, ghosts, and demons. Such things are far less scary when we know that it’s just a costume that will come off the next day.

I don’t believe in the existence of most of what we see at Halloween, yet I know that there actually are evil spiritual forces at work in this world. Paul tells the Ephesians:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Even if much of the world denies their existence, these forces exist and influence our world. Jesus calls Satan “the prince of this world” (John 12:31), and Paul talks about “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and “the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2).

Peter tells us: “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) Other texts tell us that Satan is actively working to deceive us.

Am I trying to scare you? Not at all. I want you to know that these things exist, yet I also want to remind you that we need not fear them at all. James tells us to “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7) And John provides the information that should take away all fear:

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

There are scary things in this world, but we need not fear any of them. The one who is in us is greater than the powers of this world.

Is Jesus in you? If not, let me tell you that his power and protection are available to all of us.

“After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God” (Revelation 19:1)

I want to be in the great throng that rejoices at God’s triumph. I want to excitedly celebrate God’s salvation, rather than lament not having been a part of it.

How about you?

“The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.” (Proverbs 29:13)

We look at people and say that one person is important while another one isn’t. We see successful people, rich people, beautiful people, and those who are none of those things.

Yet all these people were made in the image of the same God. They all have the same value to God. We should treat everyone as someone that God created and loves.
