“And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’” (Acts 22:16)

Paul had spent three days in prayer. He had acknowledged Jesus as Lord.

Now he needed to wash away his sins in baptism. He needed to call on the name of the Lord, obeying Jesus’ command to believe and be born again.

Why would he wait? Why do we wait?

Get right with God.

“Of what value is an idol, since a man has carved it? Or an image that teaches lies? For he who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak. (Habakkuk 2:18)

It is easy to create you own god or gods.  But that is just a different way for you to be your own god.  But you are not God, and neither are the false gods you make yourself.

“He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’” (Joshua 4:21–22)

God continually made plans for how faith would be passed from one generation to another. It’s about certain landmark moments that parents tell their children about.

Be planning now how you will pass on your faith to your children and grandchildren.

Kings do not die on crosses between thieves.  Unless that is exactly who they intended to die for.  Thieves and sinners.  Us.

“Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.” (Psalms 29:2)

I love Psalm 29, a description of a mighty storm blowing over the land of Israel. When we see the wonders of nature and the power there, we should praise God and give Him the glory that is His due.

And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. (Genesis 7:5)

We do not have to understand everything God says.  We do have to obey everything he says.

“And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”” (Revelation 7:10)

Salvation belongs to our God. It’s His to give to whomever He chooses. And He’s chosen to administer that salvation through the Lamb, Jesus Christ. Only by wholly putting your faith in Jesus can you receive God’s salvation.

Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (I Peter 3:9)

We Christians are called to a higher standard than the world.  Bless people, even those who do evil to you.

“Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”” (1 Samuel 8:5)

The desire to be like everybody else is strong. In that case, when Israel asked for a king, it meant that they were rejecting God and His rule over them.

Don’t try to be like everyone else. Try to be like Jesus!

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)

Follow Jesus.  When you do that, you will fish for men.  That was his mission.  It is our mission.
