“Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.” (Psalms 71:9)

There comes a time in our lives when many see us as useless. We’re too old. We’re too weak. We’re a burden.

God never sees us that way. He will never abandon us just because we’ve got more miles on our odometer. He will always see us as being valuable and useful to Him.

And one day, He will make our bodies whole again.

Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. (James 3:15)

The world will try to convince of the wisdom of all sorts of things.  Do not be fooled.  Some advice is right from the devil.  Be smart.

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21)

I need to have this verse engraved above my TV set so that I can see it every time I watch the news. People will set out to do a lot of things, but all that will matter in the end is what God has done.

The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” (John 19:21)

That is what you ultimately have to decide.  Do you believe Jesus is King, or only someone who claimed to be what he was not.

“Nathan said to David, “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7)

We all need a Nathan in our lives, someone to come and point out our mistakes. We rationalize away our own sins, while condemning others. We need a true friend to come and say, “You are the one! You’re the sinner. You need to get right with God.”

Read the story of Nathan and David and see what a true friend looks like.

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. (Matthew 3:8)

It is not enough to be sorry for what you have done.  Real repentance involves action.  Live forgiven.

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (Psalms 63:1)

I was working as a temporary worker with a small concrete company. I knew nothing about construction. I was left alone at the job site on a really hot day. I was terribly thirsty and saw a hose near where we were digging the foundation for a house. I was afraid to make a mess, so I opened the tap, drank quickly, and turned the water off.

The water was almost boiling hot, but I was so thirsty I didn’t care.

That’s the kind of thirst I want to have for God, a thirst that doesn’t care about anything else… it just wants to find and know God!

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” (Job 1:21)

It’s hard to escape the sense of entitlement that says, “What’s mine is mine… no one should be able to take it.”

What we should say is, “God gives. God takes away. Blessed by the name of the Lord.”
